Sean & Alex - Spring 2015 |
...back in October 2015 Sean got sick. What seemed to be a cold or viral illness turned out to be ALL - Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, the T-Cell kind.
Sean - October 25, 2015 |
I thought I should write to process through, but this is not a jog - it is a full speed ahead marathon race for his life, ever minute, every day. And we all have spent the first month running along side Sean in shock, in fear, in anger, in disbelief.
And now, I run like I am swimming a marathon...taking every breath, with every stroke, listening to the sound of my own heartbeat, praying, (really crying out and fighting it out with God), crying again, breathing some more. I bargain with God, and wrestle with God, knowing and declaring "You are good God, You love Sean more than I could ever, You are faithful... Your will be done," and "Father! Heal my son!"
The race began on October 26, the day after I took Sean to the emergency room (for the 2nd time) and the doctors scrambled, and did tests, and assured us they would see us through no matter "whether you have money or don't have money, whether you have insurance or don't have insurance" the doctor said, "we will see Sean through this to the end," he said. The first ER doctor was a moron, for lack of a better word. He was arrogant, flippant, detached, and unconcerned. Sean was already sick and showing serious symptoms. But he sent us home. When we returned Sean was so much more sick. A week had gone by, which we would later find out was a week out of a month period of time that could have cost him his life before we even got started. But that is another story for another day, or post, or comment.
On Sunday, October 25th a nice, and smart, and discerning doctor was very attentive, alarmed, and ready for action. By the time we were leaving the ER he informed us that the "more specialized blood test" would be complete and in 2-3 days the Oncology-Hematologist would call us with results. Oncologist-Hematologist? A cancer doctor? A blood specialist? What??? We left the hospital, Sean was tired, in pain, and really sick.
On Monday, the next day, the Oncologist-Hematologist called before noon. That was NOT 2-3 days, especially since the blood test was only started that morning!

He called Sean. Sean was at community college waiting for his next class. It was Dr. Nair, head of the Oncology-Hematology department. He told Sean he was sorry to tell him on the phone but he needed Sean to be admitted to the hospital as soon as possible.
And "Sean, you have leukemia. That's cancer."
